The opening game of the season saw the Portsmouth Dreadnoughts travel to Poole to play the Bournemouth Bobcats.
The first drive of the game saw the Dreadnoughts D force the Bobcats to go 3 & out, allowing the Dreadnoughts offence to march down the field and score our first touchdown of the season – A bootleg pass to WR Jake Smith which put the Dreadnoughts ahead by 6.
A few hard runs from the Bobcats pushed the Dreadnoughts back but they couldn’t covert and the offence took the field again. A series of 3 and out from both the Dreadnoughts and the Bobcats resulted in the Bobcats starting back near their own end zone after a clutch punt from George Evans. A fumbled snap recovered by the Dreadnoughts put the Offence in a great position to punch in another TD, this time for RB Tom “Thunder” Davies.
A well kicked XP puts the score at 0-13.
The Bobcats struggled to move the ball and the Dreadnoughts plagued by penalties means that a bit of back and forth until CB Dale Anchor picked the ball off to put the offence back on the field. The Dreadnoughts offence capitalised on the pick and QB Stu Rees threw his 2nd TD of the day, this time to Rookie WR Keiran Bellinger.
The Bobcats O moved the chains before the Dreadnoughts forced a punt to put the ball back in to the hands of QB Stu Rees. Hard defence dominated the next few series with both teams punting the ball away multiple times. FS and Team Captain Joe Clulow, picked the ball off to try and shift the momentum back to the Dreadnoughts and keep the Bobcats Offence off the field. Unfortunately the Dreadnoughts were not able to take advantage as the Bobcats and Dreadnoughts had a punting competition.
The last few minutes of the game saw a fantastic QB hit from LB George Evans pop the ball out into the hands of DE Matt Audley who brought it down in the Bobcats endzone. A Fake XP kick put the Dreadnoughts at 0-27 and saw the final whistle of the game.
Many thanks to the Bobcats for hosting us and we will see you at our Home ground for the second leg!
